Horses in rural regions racing
Traditional rural horse races (ঘোড়দৌড়) are held periodically across Bangladesh as cultural/festival events, mainly in villages. There is no active professional/organized turf racing circuit (like India’s race clubs) with regular schedules or official results.
Key points
- Historical note: Horse racing existed in colonial times (e.g., Ramna Racecourse in Dhaka, supported by Nawabs and British civilians), but it faded and is no longer a professional sport.
- Current form: Informal village races on open fields, often during Eid, Poush Mela, local memorials, or winter/summer seasons. Horses compete in categories (A/B/C or large/medium/small), covering ~1 km distances. Crowds of thousands attend; prizes can include livestock, cash, or goods. Northern districts (Rajshahi, Bogura, Naogaon, Chapainawabganj, Kurigram) are especially active, along with places in Jessore, Jhalakathi, Brahmanbaria, Kishoreganj, and Rajbari.
Recent/local examples (2025–2026)
- Eid-ul-Adha period (May–June 2026): Traditional races in various areas, including Jhalakathi.
- January 2026:
- Ulipur (Kurigram) — revived after 15–20 years.
- Nasirnagar (Brahmanbaria) — ~40 horses from multiple districts; “Banglar Taj” won.
- Kishoreganj (Kotiadi) — 14 horses; local winners.
- December 2025: Bogura (Sariakandi Poush Mela — major attraction); Jessore (ongoing multi-decade tradition).
- Other 2025–early 2026: Regular events in Rajshahi (Godagari Bilasi field — dozens of horses from different districts); Rajbari; Chattogram area (long-running ~130-year tradition in some spots).
These are community-organized, non-professional events focused on tradition rather than formal racing with jockey clubs, official handicaps, or betting infrastructure. Coverage is mostly local news/YouTube reports rather than centralized results sites.
For the absolute latest local events, check Bangla news channels (NTV, Rtv, Prothom Alo, etc.) or district-level social media, as they are announced closer to the date and vary by region. No national professional racing calendar exists at present.
